Wix for Nonprofits: What It Does Well, and What to Check First

connectNPO · Updated September 2026
Key takeaways
- Wix runs a discount for nonprofits through TechSoup: 70% off a 2-year Premium plan, one coupon every two years, plus a free one-year domain registration voucher. Wix publishes the terms in its own help center.
- Read the renewal line before you start. Wix states that a subscription which is not cancelled, and for which no new offer is requested, before the two-year term ends is billed automatically for two more years at the standard rate. The domain renews separately, normally for a year.
- A Wix site stays on Wix. Its help center says a site needs to be hosted and operated on Wix servers, and cannot be exported to another host. The content you build is yours, and the domain can be bought and managed elsewhere.
- Wix fits an organization that wants one editor, a small set of pages and no software to look after. It fits less well when the site may need to move later, or when several people edit parts of it and the layout has to stay put.
- connectNPO is the other option: we design and build the site, keep it current and hand it over if you leave. One plan, $180 a month plus a $1,000 build fee paid only after you approve the finished site.
A board member asks whether the organization should just use Wix. It is a fair question: the site could be online this month, and hosting, security and updates would be the platform’s job rather than yours.
This guide covers Wix for nonprofits from the two angles that decide year three: what the discount renews at, and what happens if you ever want to leave. Both come from Wix’s own help center, read on September 22, 2026.
Wix for nonprofits: is it a good choice?
Wix suits a nonprofit that wants a small site online quickly, with one person editing it and no software to maintain. It suits less well when staff have to keep structured content current, or when the site may need to move later, because a Wix site cannot be hosted anywhere else.

The nonprofit discount, and the renewal behind it
A two-year discount is like an introductory magazine subscription: the price that matters is the one on the renewal notice.
Wix runs its nonprofit offer through TechSoup. Its help center article states the terms: a 70% discounted rate on a 2-year Premium plan to create and host one website, 1 coupon code every 2 years, and a free one-year domain registration voucher. Eligibility runs through TechSoup membership, is limited to a published list of countries, and is not open to an organization that has already upgraded to a Wix Premium plan.
The line to read twice is the renewal. Wix states that if you do not cancel the subscription or request a new offer before the end of the second year, you are billed automatically for an additional two years of service at the standard rate. The domain is separate: unless it is cancelled before its renewal date, Wix bills it for an additional subscription period, which its page gives as a year in the ordinary case. That is not a trap, it is a calendar entry: put the date in the shared calendar the day you start.
We do not publish other companies’ prices here, because they change and a stale price is worse than none. Wix’s own plans page carries the current ones.
A Wix site stays on Wix
Wix is direct about this in its help center: “In order for your site to work properly, it needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers.” It also says plainly that the content you build on Wix belongs to you, and that you can connect a domain bought and managed with another provider.
So the decision is not only about this year’s site. It is about whether the organization is willing to keep the site on one company’s platform for as long as the organization exists. For a five-page brochure site that is an easy yes. For a site that will grow programs, events and documents over ten years, it is worth a board conversation.
Where Wix fits a nonprofit well
A rented apartment suits some households better than a house: somebody else fixes the boiler, and you cannot move a wall. The same trade runs through builders.
Four things to check before you start
1
What the price is in year three
The discount covers two years. Wix says an uncancelled subscription is billed for two more at the standard rate.
Wix help center
2
Who owns the domain
The voucher registers it for a year through Wix. It can also be bought and managed at a registrar you control.

3
Whether you could leave
Wix states a site cannot be hosted anywhere else. Our reading: budget for a rebuild if you move.

Who edits what
Decide before the build which parts staff will change every month, and try editing one of them.
Your own test
If you would rather not build it yourself
connectNPO designs the site, builds it, keeps it current and hands it over if you leave. $180 a month, and the $1,000 build fee only after you approve the finished site.
The part builders leave to your staff
A builder hands you a very good stove. Someone still has to cook every week.
On a builder, the work that remains is editing. An event that has passed stays up until a person takes it down, and the same goes for the hours and the newest document. That is where sites drift: in our count of 150 small California nonprofit websites, 37 showed something plainly out of date, and the most common signal was an event more than 30 days past still shown as upcoming.
It is worth seeing the other arrangement before deciding. On the Harborlight sample site, an event carries its own date and comes off the site by itself once that date passes, and staff type into set boxes rather than moving the design. You can open the staff side yourself from the Harborlight sample; nothing you change there is saved.

The other option, and what it costs
The honest comparison is not Wix against WordPress. It is “we build and run it ourselves” against “somebody builds and runs it for us”. Our version of the second is one plan: $180 a month, plus a $1,000 build fee paid only once you approve the finished site, so the first payment is $1,180 and the first year is $3,160.
It includes the design and build, hosting, the domain renewal up to $25 a year, backups, updates and every change you send us. After twelve monthly payments the site leaves with you at no charge, built to run on WordPress with free add-ons, so there is nothing to buy again later. What that means in practice is in WordPress for nonprofits and nonprofit website hosting.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wix free for nonprofits?
Wix states that connecting a domain to a Wix site requires upgrading to a plan. For charities, Wix partners with TechSoup on a 70 percent discount for a two-year Premium plan, with a free one-year domain registration voucher.
What happens when the Wix nonprofit discount ends?
Wix states that organizations can request one coupon code every two years, and that a subscription which is not cancelled or renewed through the offer before the end of the second year is billed automatically for another two years at the standard rate. The domain is billed separately for a further subscription period, normally a year, unless it is cancelled first.
Can you move a Wix site to another host?
No. Wix states in its help center that a Wix site needs to be hosted and operated on Wix servers, and that the reason is its own software. It also states that the content you build belongs to you, and your domain can be bought and managed elsewhere.
Is Wix or WordPress better for a nonprofit?
Each has a different downside. Wix asks for no maintenance and keeps the site on its platform. WordPress can be moved and extended, and somebody has to apply updates. Pick by which risk your team can carry, not by feature lists.
What does a nonprofit website cost if somebody else builds it?
On our plan it is 180 dollars a month plus a 1,000 dollar build fee, paid only after you approve the finished site. That covers design, hosting, the domain renewal up to 25 dollars a year, backups, updates and every change you send us.
See your finished website before you pay for it.
No platform to learn, and no renewal date to track. You pay nothing until you approve the finished site; the first payment is then $1,180 (the build fee plus the first month), and $180 a month after that.
